Movado with its iconic gold dot is one of the most popular Swiss luxury watches in the United States. The gold dot symbolizes the sun at high noon, with the watch hands symbolizing the movement of the earth. The name Movado is Esperanto for “continuous movement.” The watch company was founded in 1881 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland by Achilles Dittesheim. The watch company was then purchased in 1983 by an New Yorker, Gedalio Grinberg.
Movado’s Museum watch was the first watch to be displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Since then, Movado has enjoyed tremendous popularity not only because of its understated elegance but also because it makes Swiss luxury watches more affordable.
The Movado Group, Inc. has posted higher profits in the first quarter of 2011 due to the popularity of its Movado Bold collection, which is in the $300 – $500 price range. Movado Bold is geared towards young, trendy customers.
