Movado with its iconic gold dot is one of the most popular Swiss luxury watches in the United States. IWC, short for International Watch Company, was founded by an American engineer, Florentine Ariosto Jones in 1868. Jones founded the International Watch Company with the intention of combining the craftsmanship of the Swiss with the modern engineering technology from the U.S. to manufacture movements and watch parts for the American market. The IWC factory located along the Rhine in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, is the only Swiss watchmaking company in the eastern part of the country.

During the end of the 19th century, IWC was one of the first watch manufacturers to recognize the potential of the wristwatch by developing new movements. It also continued to build original pocket watch movements into wristwatches when the market in the thirties demanded large, extremely accurate wristwatches. Among its many innovations, IWC developed the first “Grande Complication” for the wrist. IWC also developed the super-antimagnetic “Ingenieur” and the only diver’s watches with a mechanical depth gauge and which are capable of withstanding water pressure even down to a depth of 2000 metres.

IWC is also famous for its Pilot’s watches. IWC was a pioneer providing watches to pioneer aviators. IWC today offers a comprehensive range of professional pilot’s watches, which are fitted with special protection against magnetic fields. In the fifties the company not only led the competition in the race to introduce the first automatic movements, but also developed, the so-called Pellaton winding mechanism, an unsurpassed winding system that it still uses exclusively today in its large automatic factory movements.

Known for its tradition of excellence, IWC’s motto is: “Probus Scafusia” meaning Excellence from Schaffhausen. The watchmaking company’s motto is characteristic of its dedication to craft perfection, the training of its specialists, and the renunciation of mass-market products. The counterfeiter, Binh Cam Tran, in addition to serving 6 years in prison, was also convicted of trafficking in counterfeit goods, conspiracy, and nine counts of money laundering. Swiss luxury watches should not be repaired or serviced just by anyone. I found out the hard way when I had my watch battery replaced at the biggest department store in New York City – the one that starts with an M—- and located close to the Penn Station. Those of you who are familiar with New York City know very well which store I am talking about.

My Swiss watch is a Limited Edition Invicta, with a third of a carat in diamonds, a sapphire crystal, a mother of pearl face, water resistance up to 50 meters, and rose gold plating over stainless steel. Sure, the watch I was wearing that day was not really top of the line Swiss luxury, but it had a retail price of almost a thousand dollars.

I thought the biggest department store in New York City would know how to treat such a watch with care. Much to my chagrin, the woman who replaced the battery used a Swiss army knife to forcibly open the case. As I heard some loud hammering in the backroom, I wanted to shout: “What in the world are you doing with my watch?” True enough, when she came out of the backroom, my watch had a very visible gap in the case, the water resistance was compromised, and showing very noticeable scratches where the Swiss army knife made its way to pry open the case.

When questioned about the gap, the woman replied that: “that is where you open the watch,” – all that for a charge of $40.83 for the battery replacement. Good heavens! She should have returned my watch if the store does not have the equipment to open it.

It’s been almost three weeks since I shipped the watch back to the store so they could repair the damage done. Meantime, the woman’s supervisor has been apologetic and said she has not realized that such a small thing would cost so much (she also probably meant so much aggravation).

But who would think that the biggest department store in New York City does not have the proper equipment to handle a Swiss luxury watch with care nor its staff not having the wherewithal to know what to do with such a watch?
Lesson learned: make sure that your Swiss luxury watch is serviced only at an authorized dealer or a shop with certified watch technicians.

The Luxury Institute uses a rating system called the Luxury Brand Status Index (LBSI), where high net-worth consumers are asked to rate luxury brands by category across four equally weighted components:

1) Consistently Superior Quality;
2) Uniqueness and Exclusivity;
3) Making the Customer Feel Special across the Entire Experience; and
4) Being Consumed by People Who Are Admired and Respected.

Apparently, the wealthiest among us have managed to further set themselves apart by choosing well-respected but relatively lesser known brands. In 2010, it was not a Patek Philippe, a Cartier, nor a Rolex that was considered the most prestigious luxury watch by the wealthiest. Out of 33 luxury watch brands, Blancpain came out as the number one most prestigious luxury watch, followed by Vacheron Constantin, then third by Breguet. Out of a score of 10, scores of the top 3 Swiss luxury brands as rated by the richest people are:

• Blancpain: 8.74
• Vacheron Constantin: 8.15
• Breguet: 8.09

The Word “Swiss” in Swiss Luxury Watches

In our last post, we wrote about the reasons why one should not buy fake or counterfeit Swiss luxury watches. After a couple of days, one such website selling fake Swiss luxury watches copied the previous article almost word for word, just adding the word “Replica” to the title, defeating the very essence of why the post was written. Truly unbelievable!

As we continue to advocate for genuine Swiss Luxury Watches, we look up to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH to define what is “Swiss” and “not Swiss.” Below are some definitions that will guide you in your buying decision and learn more about how “Swiss” a watch is:

A Swiss Watch: According to the Federation, a watch may carry the name “Swiss made” or “Swiss” only if it complies with the following:
• Its movement is Swiss;
• Its movement is cased up in Switzerland; and
• The manufacturer carries out the final inspection in Switzerland.

A Swiss Watch Movement: A movement is considered Swiss if it complies with the following conditions:
• It has been assembled in Switzerland;
• It has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland;
• The components of Swiss manufacture account for at least 50 percent of the total value, without taking into account the cost of assembly.

These standards are very strict. If the movement complies with the above-mentioned conditions but is not assembled in Switzerland, the name “Swiss” may be indicated in one of the components of the movement. On the outside of the watch, the entire phrase “Swiss movement” may be used. The word “movement” must be spelled out in full and have the same size, color, and type-face as the word “Swiss.”

What do these ordinances mean? The Swiss watch industry is really serious regarding the use of the word “Swiss” and the quality of the watches that bear the origin. The watches we feature are genuine Swiss made luxury watches – not replicas, fakes, or counterfeits. We want readers and buyers to be educated regarding the quality of their purchase and why it is important to buy from a reputable source.

The Pitfalls of Buying Fake Swiss Luxury Watches

Swiss luxury watches have especially been targeted by counterfeiters. Counterfeiting is a form of criminality where design, brand, or image of a product is reproduced. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH writes:

“Counterfeiters usually focus on the appearance rather than the technical parts of a watch, as this results in much easier profits. Counterfeit watches generally incorporate a whole range of illegalities: the illicit reproduction of a brand, a spurious country-of-origin mark, the copy of a design, and often falsified hallmarks or a bogus classification (“chronometer”, for example).”

While counterfeiters in the past have targeted tourists, counterfeit networks have become more brazen and sophisticated, peddling their products in newspapers, television, and now the internet. There are websites that call themselves “Swiss Luxury Watches” while all the time selling counterfeits named after the most revered brands, at an unimaginable price. One such website sells a Patek Philippe for $105 and a Cartier for $110!!! These watches are obviously fakes and the sellers are actually violating the law by using these trademarks. This website even lists its email as “email@123.com” and has a link to a Chinese website. Why authorities have not caught or taken down this website is unthinkable.

Buyers of counterfeit Swiss luxury watches are perpetrating crime and contributing to a clandestine economy. These counterfeiters utilize detestable practices such as sweat shops and child labor, causing unemployment for reputable companies. In addition to contributing to such practices, buyers of fake or counterfeit products endanger themselves. They could be placed in an embarrassing situation with custom officials questioning them when traveling to another country, having the fake watch confiscated, or being imposed a fine. They are also endangering their health when using counterfeit watches since these fakes do not adhere to standards such as protection against allergies, radioactivity, etc.

To avoid problems associated with counterfeit watches, we recommend that buyers purchase only from reputable sources, whether online or at an authorized retailer. You should not be tempted by what seems to be a good bargain. Genuine Swiss luxury watches could not be bought in streets. When buying online, make sure that prices offered are within the acceptable range for Swiss luxury watches. No genuine Swiss luxury watch is made in China. Lastly, keep in mind that buying fake or counterfeit watches is a way of promoting crime and could only get you in trouble.
