Among Swiss luxury watches, Rolex has been the most counterfeited and many unwitting buyers have fallen prey to scammers selling fakes or replica watches. Many of these fakes are sold in the streets of Hong Kong and New York, and even online. There are even websites that use the term “Swiss Luxury Watches” for the counterfeits they sell. A Rolex watch for $49? Don’t be fooled – that is definitely a fake!
We want to help you distinguish a genuine Rolex from a counterfeit. There are many ways you could tell the difference:
Price: A new Rolex watch is priced upwards of $3,500. Why would anyone think a $49 to $150 Rolex is genuine? Not unless they are uninformed or deliberately want to buy a fake watch.
Check the Case Number, Model Number, Case Back ID and Movement Signature.
Casebacks: Very few Rolex watches have clear casebacks. The Rolex Cellini Collection is one of the very few that have a clear caseback. If you see a clear caseback, that could be a fake, unless it’s a Cellini.
Hologram Stickers: A new Rolex comes with a hologram sticker. If the 3-D effect on the hologram is not there, that is a counterfeit.
Date Magnification: All genuine Rolex watches excluding the “Sea-Dweller” features the cyclops that magnifies the date by 2.5x. On counterfeit Rolex watches, the cyclop is much smaller. Many counterfeits also use larger fonts on the date to fool the average consumer.
Micro-etched Crystal: The Rolex crown is etched below the 6 o’clock marker. With a jeweler’s loupe, you will see that the crown is more clearly defined in a genuine Rolex than a counterfeit.
Triplock Crown Seal: If you are buying a Sea-Dweller, Submariner, or Daytona models, a genuine Rolex utilizes the extra seal on the winding tube whereas the counterfeit comes with no seal at all.
Let me add that buying your Rolex from a reputable seller is very important. Don’t waste your hard-earned money on a fake or replica.
Rolex is the highest selling brand among Swiss luxury watches. Rolex watches are also favorites for many counterfeiters. This is the reason it is important to buy watches from reputable sources. Rolex watches were first manufactured in 1908, under its own brand name. Since then, the watch company has been responsible for several innovations:
Rolex launched the first self-winding Rolex wristwatch in 1931, after the Harwood design patent in 1923 and the production of the first self-winding watch in 1928. Rolex participated in the development of the original quartz watch movements. In 1968, Rolex collaborated with a consortium of 16 Swiss watch manufacturers to develop the Beta 21 quartz movement used in their Rolex Quartz Date 5100.
Rolex produced specific models suitable for the extremes of deep-sea diving, mountain climbing and aviation. Early sports models included the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea Dweller. The Explorer and Explorer II were developed specifically for mountaineers. The most iconic model is the Rolex GMT Master, was originally developed in 1954 to assist pilots with the problem of crossing multiple time-zones when on transcontinental flights. The Rolex GMT Master II was reissued in 2005 as the “50th anniversary edition”.
Rolex has three watch lines: Oyster Perpetual, Professional and Cellini (the Cellini line is Rolex’s line of ‘dressy’ watches) and the primary bracelets for the Oyster line are named Jubilee, Oyster and President.
