Piaget currently produces the world’s thinnest automatic Swiss luxury watches. For the past 50 years, Piaget has been a pioneer and leader in the field of ultra-thin movements. In 1957, Piaget developed Calibre 9P, the world’s thinnest mechanical hand-wound movement at 2mm thick. Two years later, Valentin Piaget filed a patent for Calibre 12P, which was marketed in 1960 and set a new record for thin self-winding movements. More recently, the 2.1mm thick calibre 430P was launched in 1998, and the 2.5mm 830P in 2007. Piaget has also created several thin complicated movements, including the 3.5mm calibre 600P tourbillon, and the 855P with fits a perpetual calendar, retrograde displays and a dual time-zone indication into a movement that is only 5.65mm thick.
Creating ultra-thin movements requires extreme precision. The gear train wheels in the calibre 1200P are a mere 0.12mm thick – about 30% thicker than a human hair. Unlike other brands whose thin movements are also small in diameter, Piaget’s Calibre 1200P measures just under 30mm across.
Piaget watches are manufactured by Piaget SA in Switzerland, a Swiss luxury watchmaker and jeweller. Piaget SA belongs to the Richemont group, a company specializing in luxury products. Piaget has been ranked as the sixth (6th) most luxurious brand by the Luxury Institute in 2008. Piaget specializes in ultra-thin watch movements. More recent watch movements the 430P, 450P and 438P, with a thickness of only 2.1 millimetres, are used in the Altiplano line.
Piaget developed the thinnest tourbillon movement, the calibre 600P which has a thickness of only 3.5 mm. Its frame is particularly sophisticated: composed of 42 minuscule parts, including three titanium bridges, it weighs just 0.2 grams.
Piaget uses the art of miniature painting in some of its timepieces. With Piaget owning the largest jewelry workshop in Geneva, diamonds used in Piaget timepieces and jewelry are of the highest quality. Diamonds are cut, adjusted and set by hand in Piaget’s Geneva jewelry workshop. Diamonds used meet the highest standards of colour (D to G) and clarity (IF to VVS). The diamonds are tested according to strict in-house guidelines using the 3 C’s – clarity, carat, colour, in addition to size. Piaget is a member of the “Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices” and the “Kimberley Process Certification Scheme”, ensuring that diamonds used in its watches and jewelry pieces are not so-called “blood diamonds,” meaning they do not originate from an area of conflict.
