Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of the most prestigious Swiss luxury watch brands, with origins dating back to 1833. Jaeger-LeCoultre has been responsible for many innovations in the watchmaking industry. Its founder, Antoine LeCoultre, developed the world’s most precise measuring instrument, the millionometer (a device capable of measuring to the nearest thousandths of a millimetre) in 1844. LeCoultre also created a system that eliminated the need for keys to rewind and set watches. Because of his inventions, Antoine LeCoultre has received a gold medal at the Universal Exposition in London in 1851, for his innovations in the fields of watch precision and mechanization.
Jaeger-LeCoultre continues with innovation in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Jaeger-LeCoultre developed the world’s thinnest pocket watch movement in 1903 and invented the Duoplan watch in 1925. It also developed the world’s smallest movement, Caliber 101, with less than 1 gram and 74 parts. In 1938, Jaeger-LeCoultre developed the compass miniature camera. The world’s automatic alarm wristwatch, the automatic Memovox produced between 1956 – 1968, is equipped with Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 815. The watchmaking company also produced the world’s first dive watch with alarm movement in 1961. In 1967, Jaeger-LeCoultre took part in the creation of the first quartz wristwatch in watch making history, the Beta 2. In 1983, to celebrate its 150 year anniversary, Jaeger-LeCoultre manufactured a limited series of the smallest ever made rectangular complications : month/day/date/phase de lune/petite seconde. Jaeger-LeCoultre continues on with so many innovations well into the 21st century. In 2009, Jaeger-LeCoultre launched the Hybris Mechanica à Grande Sonnerie, the world’s most complicated wristwatch (26 complications).
Jaeger-LeCoultre, because of its precision, has supplied measuring instruments, primarily dashboard instruments such as speedometers and fuel meters to French automobile makers Citroën, Peugeot and Renault. Jaeger speedometers and tachometers were also supplied to British sports cars such as Triumph and to the Italian-made Ferrari.
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s well known collections include: the Reverso, the Duometre, the Master Grande, the Master Compressor, and the AMVOX.
Driven by the determination to achieve extreme levels of performance, Jaeger-LeCoultre requires that each of its watches be subjected to the rigorous test program known as the 1000 Hours Control.
