I remember the first Swiss luxury watch that I owned. It was a Girard-Perregaux that my mother gave me years ago. The watch was a vintage 1945 square Girard-Perregaux in gold with a hand wind movement. I was thrilled when mom gave me the watch she was wearing because she just acquired another luxury timepiece. My siblings and I learned to appreciate the finer things in life from my mother. Mom loved the scent of Dior, shopping at high-end stores, Italian made shoes and bags, and genuine Swiss made watches.
To my regret, I no longer have the watch. It must have slipped out of my hand while shielding myself from a sudden downpour one day. Girard-Perregaux watches, especially those in gold, are priced at a premium. I may be able to replace that watch someday, but one could never replace the memories that come with receiving a valuable present from a loved one. As I ponder about that watch today, I console myself with the thought that someone in need must have found my Girard-Perregaux watch that day.
